Understanding Yizkor

Many Ashkenazi synagogues recite Yizkor on Yom Kippur, Simchat Torah, Pesach, and Shavuot. Yizkor is often associated with the recitation of memorial prayers only by those who have lost immediate relatives, while the rest of the congregation exits the sanctuary and waits in the lobby. But originally, Yizkor was created as a memorial for communal tragedies and not just personal losses. You can learn more about Yizkor in the articles (below) that Rabbi Brody has written about this important topic. We have also prepared a Yizkor supplement, including a new memorial tefila for the victims of October 7th and the Iron Swords war, which can be downloaded here.
